The unrolling spirals of “Gathering Waves” look like waves but the spirals also gather the force and power of those waves. There is a strong and energetic feeling of forward movement in this sculpture but at the same time the rounded parts of each spiral take that energy and bring it back into itself in a gathering/protective motion.

All the waves emanate from one point high up near the ceiling facing the entrance to the lobby. From that point the waves expand out for sixty feet at different heights and lengths to almost fill the width of the lobby. The waves embody the strong forward motion that one thinks of when one thinks of a military force. The curving inward at the far end of each spiral brings to mind the gathering together and caring for of all the members of that military force. This is the mission of the VA Outpatient Care. All the different branches of medicine and care, whether they are physical, emotional or psychological are branches of the VA and come from one point (the VA itself) and move out to embrace all the members of the military. There is Pulmonary, Oncology, Therapy, Cardiology…..etc. All these different departments make up the VA Outpatient services. Each department, each caregiver is a wave that gathers in those who need care.
